Why Choose Fiona Physio?

As a Physiotherapist with 40 years in the profession I’ve seen a lot change in the way we approach assessment and treatment of pain and loss of strength and mobility in the population. The value of good hands on manual therapy, graduated exercise programmes and self management of tight soft tissue is I hope what our community recognises in the service that Physiotherapists provide.

About Us

As a Physiotherapist with 40 years in the profession I’ve seen a lot change in the way we approach assessment and treatment of pain and loss of strength and mobility in the population. The value of good hands on manual therapy, graduated exercise programmes and self management of tight soft tissue is I hope what our community recognises in the service that Physiotherapists provide.

My experience in Private Practice and Aged Care Facilities has taught me the benefits of simply staying mobile and also how to choose the most important and most appropriate exercises for each person. Exercises don’t have to be complicated and they often involve use of light weights or exercise band and if done regularly , yield good results, commonly a decrease in pain and better upright posture, mobility and balance. As we get older, we forget to move as much as we did when we were young, but research has proved that older muscles strengthen the same as younger muscles so we just need some re-education on how to move to regain that strength and mobility.

It is my job as a Physiotherapist to explain the injury or disease process and how it affects movement and everyday ability to function. This knowledge makes it easier for clients to understand why we need to do the specific stretch and strengthen exercises we are prescribed. Thanks to dedicated researchers, we now have a better understanding of ‘Core Stability’ and how poor posture, whether sitting or standing, can cause muscle imbalances that can lead to weakness, pain, overuse and sporting injuries. We now realise the benefits of specific exercise performed in functional positions, that is exercise relevant to the activity of daily living or work duties or sporting activity that our clients are engaged in.

I have a great collection of devices at home I regularly ‘roll’ on to smooth out the ‘kinks’: foam roller, gym ball, Pilates ball, reflex ball, trigger ball, tennis ball to name a few. The floor is a safe place to exercise and manoeuvring around on these devices is really good for your core, providing you can get back up again!
